Age Discrimination Employment Act (ADEA) – The Federal Age Discrimination Employment Act of 1967 prohibits discrimination against individuals who are age 40 or older, by employers with 20 or more employees as well as by state and local government agencies.
Equal Pay Act of 1963 – The Federal Equal Pay Act of 1963 is similar to the California Equal Pay Law in that it requires employers to provide equal pay without regard to an individual’s sex where equal work is performed in the same establishment under similar working conditions on the jobs requiring equal skill, effort, and responsibility.
Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 – The Federal Immigration Reform and Control Act prohibits discrimination on the basis of national origin or citizenship status in employment. However, at the same time, this law makes it a crime for employers to hire illegal aliens and requires employers to keep records to ensure an employee has the legal right to work.
Pregnancy Discrimination Act – The Pregnancy Discrimination Act was signed into federal law as an amendment to Title VII in 1978 as it constituted a form of unlawful sex discrimination. Both California’s (Fair Employment and Housing Act, FEHA) and federal law s prohibit discrimination based on pregnancy, child birth, and related medical conditions. The act focuses on the manner in which females are treated with respect to both employment opportunities, such as job retention, promotions, and the provision of fringe benefits.
Uniformed Services Employment and Re-employment Rights Act of 1994 - Protects the re-employment rights of veterans and requires government contractors to agree to take affirmative action to hire and promote qualified disabled veterans. It also prohibits discrimination against persons because of their service in the uniformed services with respect to all aspects of employment, including hiring, re-employment, retention, promotions, and benefits. The Veterans’ Act of 1974 prohibits employers from refusing to hire, retain, or promote any individual because of an obligation that the individual has as a member of a reserve component of the Armed Forces.
